   William Taylor Copeland MP (1797-1868) , was Lord Mayor of London and Member of Parliament for Coleraine. The family claimed descent form John de Copeland who captured king David II of Scotland in 1346.  He was the director of several railways and invested in collieries , the infrastructure and fuel for his business.
 
   He was the son of William Copeland, business partner of Josiah Spode II. He succeeded his father in  1827, leading to an eventual takeover and securing the next generation of porcelain production.
 
Together with his Art Director Thomas Battem, he introduced statuary porcelain, a revolutionary paste resembling marble. This was later disputed by Minton's, who had coined the material 'Parian Ware'. It was used to  produce luxury statues and ornamental wares.
