MAHARAJA GAEKWAD OF BERODA Armorial Crown Crest Plate

MAHARAJA GAEKWAD OF BERODA Armorial Crown Crest Plate

Superb Minton porcelain plate, dating to the  20th Century.  Hand painted central crown

and sword for His Higness The (Maharajah) Gaekwad of Beroda.

Probably Sayajirao Gaekwad III (ruled 1879-1939) or Sir Pratapsinh Gaekwad (ruled 1939-1951).

Pilaji Rao Gaekwad conquered the city of Beroda from the Mughals in 1721 and founded the Dynasty.

The Laxmi Palace, Beroda, Gujurat, India was reputed to  be the most expensive privatre residence of the 19th Century. Designed by Major Charles Mant (1840-81) and Robert Fellowes Chisholm (1840-1915) pioneers of the Orientalist Style, combining Western and Eastern forms.

The 1911 Delhi  Durbar was an auspicious occasion as the King Emperor was for the first time

present in person.  Each Indian Prince was expected to bow three times before him, then walk backwards.  Sayajirao Gaekwad III bowed once, then promptly turned his back and walked off, laughing !
