English Armorial Plate HULLOCK impaling MARTIN

Fine English porcelain plate, enriched with raised gilding in compartments, with a centra family crest and arms. Flight Barr and Barr, probably painted by Henry Stinton circa 1825. Blason : "An ostrich's head between two wings gu., holding in the mouth a horse-shoe or".

 

  This was made for SIR JOHN HULLOCK 1767-1829 Judge and Baron of the Exchequer. Plates with full arms display HULLOCK impaling MARTIN.  Motto 'Tentanda Via Est' , 'The way must be tried'. He resided at Thorngate House, Barnard Castle, Durham,  that he enlarged to entertain other Judges.

 

Perfect condition, minor wear, regilding.

Measures approx 8.75 Inches wide.
